Relatedness

Building and having warm and mutual relationships with people who you care about, rather than feeling isolated or being unable to form meaningful bonds.

Relatedness is about forming deep, meaningful connections with people who truly know and care about you. It's the warmth that comes from mutual understanding, shared experiences, and knowing you have people in your life who genuinely matter to you—and to whom you matter in return.

This need shows up when you have a heart-to-heart conversation with a close friend who really gets what you're going through, when you share inside jokes with family members, or when you feel completely comfortable being yourself around certain people. It's calling someone when you have good news because you know they'll be genuinely excited for you, or having people who check in when you're going through a tough time.

Relatedness isn't about having many acquaintances—it's about quality connections where you can be vulnerable, honest, and authentic. It might be a romantic partnership built on deep trust, a friendship that's weathered years of ups and downs, or the special bond you have with a sibling or parent.

When this need goes unmet, even surrounded by people, you can feel profoundly lonely. When it's fulfilled, you have an emotional anchor that provides comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging in the world.

Needs on a Desert Island

Imagine you're shipwrecked on a desert island with a group of survivors. You're responsible for fulfilling everyone's fundamental needs to create a thriving community.

You want to maximize the chances that a passing ship will detect your presence on the island, so you task one person with going up to the highest peak to keep a signaling fire burning. Because the climb is long and arduous, this person’s stores of fresh food and water can only be replenished once a week. Pretty soon, that solitary islander will start craving human contact.
